Wimbledon: Jelena Ostapenko reaches last 16, faces Putintseva next
Jelena Ostapenko defeated Bernarda Pera 6-1, 6-3 on Saturday and will play Kazakh Yulia Putintseva in the next round
Former Wimbledon semi-finalist Jelena Ostapenko is back in the second week at Wimbledon.
The Latvian completed a short, sweet dismissal of American Bernarda Pera on Court 12, 6-1, 6-3, to reach the round of 16 at Wimbledon for the fourth time.
The No 13 seed needed just 59 minutes to cruise to the finish line, as she dropped just four first-serve points (20 of 24) and broke serve six times from 10 opportunities.
It was a fantastic returning day for Ostapenko, who won more than half of her return points (30 of 52) and cracked 19 winners against only 15 unforced errors.
The Latvian will meet Yulia Putintseva, who upset world No 1 Iga Swiatek in another third-round clash on Saturday.
The Latvian defeated Australian wildcard Ajla Tomljanovic (6-1, 6-2) and Ukrainian qualifier Daria Snigur (6-3, 6-0) in the previous rounds of The Championships.
Earlier in the tournament, Pera, ranked No 97, edged out Russian Anastasia Potapova (6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (6)) and Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 23 seed (3-6, 6-3, 6-4).
