Wimbledon: Lucky Loser Mmoh stuns 11th-seeded Auger-Aliassime
Michael Mmoh edged out Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 6-4 on Monday and will play German Maximilian Marterer in the next round
American lucky loser Michael Mmoh edged out Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 11 seed, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 6-4 to reach the second round of Wimbledon at the All England Club in London on Monday afternoon.
It has been a wonderful year at the Slams for Mmoh. He had never been past the second round at a major prior to January, when he reached the third round as a Lucky Loser. Today, he earned his second top 20 Grand Slam of the season by taking out the Canadian in three hours and 59 minutes.
Mmoh, ranked No 119, will face German Maximilian Marterer next.
Auger-Aliassime: I wasn’t myself
The Candian has not been himself of late on tour. He has battled injuries as he has lost six of his last seven matches since April.
“It’s a tough day. I have to give him credit,” he said. “He served well. He played a good match, I think.
“I wasn’t totally myself out there for different reasons. Of course I knew I was not coming with the best preparation or the best few weeks before that, but I still tried and I thought I could do well – I thought I could be better.”
Felix is not himself
A tendon problem in the knee has bothered the Canadian for sometime, and he knew it would be difficult to compete at Wimbledon ahead of time.
“A problem with my tendon there, It’s been ongoing for a few months,” he said. “We’re working hard every day to try to resolve the situation. You know, we’ll keep going. We knew it was going to be challenging to come here. I didn’t play many matches. I wasn’t really able to test myself physically and play more than two practice sets in a row.”
Auger-Aliassime seems to believe that rest and recuperation will do the trick and he hopes to find his form later in the season.
“I can play. It’s just, yeah, I’m just not myself yet,” he said. “So I’ll keep working and be patient. Hopefully, you know, as the season goes on I can come back to a good level.”
