Maria saves match points to beat Ostapenko and reach Wimbledon quarter-final
Tatjana Maria edged out Jelena Ostapenko 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 on Sunday. She’ll face the winner of the match between Heather Watson and German Jule Niemeier in the next round
German Tatjana Maria edged out Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 12 seed, 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 and saving match points in the second set to move into the last eight of Wimbledon at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Sunday afternoon.
And she was quick to thank the crowd for their support afterwards, saying that it had helped her through the second set: “I thought, ‘OK, they believe in me, so I believe in me’ and I keep going!”
Maria, ranked No 103, will play the winner of the match between Heather Watson and German Jule Niemeier next.
Ahead of her victory, the 34-year-old German defeated Australian qualifier Astra Sharma (4-6, 6-3, 6-4), Romanian Sorana Cirstea, the No 26 seed (6-3, 1-6, 7-5) and Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 5 seed (6-3, 7-5).
Ostapenko, ranked No 17, won against Frenchwoman Oceane Dodin (6-4, 6-4), Belgian qualifier Yanina Wickmayer (6-2, 6-2) and Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu (3-6, 6-1, 6-1) earlier in the tournament.
