Nick Kyrgios reached the third round of Wimbledon by beating Serb Filip Krajinovic, the No 26 seed and Queen’s finalist, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Thursday.
Kyrgios, ranked No 40, will face the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 4 seed, next, in a much-anticipated match-up.
The Australian won against wildcard Paul Jubb (3-6, 6-1, 7-5, 6-7 (3), 7-5) in the previous round – and admitted that he had suffered from nerves in that performance.
“Just getting over the line in that first round was massive,” he said in his on-court interview. “I’ve been playing some really good tennis the last couple of months, so I was really surprised the way I played the other day.
“Today I was in the zone, great body language and played well. Just wanted to remind everyone that I’m pretty good.”
Kyrgios: I’m so excited to be here
Kyrgios has done a good job of reminding people of that since the start of the grass-court season, reaching the semi-final in both Halle and Stuttgart.
And he stressed just how much he wants to succeed at Wimbledon.
“I’m just happy, I’ve been working hard, I’ve been preparing for this tournament, it’s been circled on my calendar all year. I’m so excited to be here. It’s my best chance to win a Grand Slam, of all four. I’ve obviously got a very tough draw. Today I couldn’t have played better.”
In the previous round, Krajinovic, ranked No 31, won against Czech Jiri Lehecka (5-7, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-4).
