Kyrgios charges into second week, defeating Tsitsipas in pressure cooker

Australian Nick Kyrgios edged out Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 4 seed, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7) to move into the last 16 of Wimbledon.

In a wild, dramatic encounter, Nick Kyrgios continued his recent mastery of Stefanos Tsitsipas (4-1) and booked a spot in the round of 16 at Wimbledon for the first time in six years.

Kyrgios, ranked No 40, will play American Brandon Nakashima next.

It was Kyrgios second win in as many months over Tsitsipas on the grass. He also topped him in a deciding set at Halle.

“I honestly felt like the favorite coming in,” the Aussie told the crowd. “I played him a couple weeks ago. But I knew that it’s gonna be a tough match, you know, he’s a hell of a player. I had my own tactics out there. He knows how to play me,. He’s beaten me once, and obviously I’ve had success [against him as well]. It was a hell of a match.”

Kyrgios is continuing his quest for a major title. Ahead of his victory, the Australian beat wildcard Paul Jubb (3-6, 6-1, 7-5, 6-7 (3), 7-5) and Serb Filip Krajinovic, the No 26 seed (6-2, 6-3, 6-1).

Tsitsipas, ranked No 5, suffers an early exit. He edged out Swiss qualifier Alexander Ritschard (7-6 (1), 6-3, 5-7, 6-4) and won against Australian Jordan Thompson (6-2, 6-3, 7-5) in the previous rounds but couldn’t resist Kyrgios’ fury.
