Not seeing red, but wearing red – Kyrgios advances to Wimbledon quarter-finals
Nick Kyrgios beat Brandon Nakashima 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-2 on Monday afternoon. He’ll play Chilean Cristian Garin in the next round
Australian Nick Kyrgios returned to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon by winning against American Brandon Nakashima 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-2 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Monday.
He promptly donned a red cap and red shoes in defiance of the tournament’s famous all-white clothing rule.
It was a more subdued performance than the one against Stefanos Tsitsipas on Saturday, interrupted briefly by Kyrgios’s need for treatment on his shoulder. Kyrgios, ranked No 40, will play Chilean Cristian Garin next.
“I knew from the get-go I wasn’t playing as well as I would have liked” said Kyrgios. “I wasn’t feeling the ball like I was against Tsitsipas or Krajinovic. I knew I had to keep my head down and just battle today. It was a good mental performance.”
Nakashima : “Some of Nick’s best tennis”
“I feel like Nick played a really good match, Said Nakashima after the match. I think both of us played a high level throughout the whole match. I was kind of physically a little bit tired towards the end, but, I mean, he definitely played some of his best tennis in the fifth set.”
The Australian previously reached the last eight of the tournament in 2014. This time round he beat wildcard Paul Jubb (3-6, 6-1, 7-5, 6-7 (3), 7-5), Serb Filip Krajinovic, the No 26 seed (6-2, 6-3, 6-1) and Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 4 seed (6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7)).
In the previous rounds, Nakashima, ranked No 56, defeated German qualifier Nicola Kuhn (6-3, 6-7 (1), 6-3, 6-2), Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No 13 seed (6-2, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (6)) and Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan Riveros (6-4, 6-4, 6-1).
