Crying during rain delays, Kostyuk rallies for an emotional win at Wimbledon
Marta Kostyuk won against Maria Sakkari 0-6, 7-5, 6-2 on Wednesday and will play the winner of the match between American Alison Riske-Amritraj and Spaniard Paula Badosa in the next round
Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk had never defeated a top-10 player at a Grand Slam before, so when she dropped the opening set 6-0, she probably figured it wasn’t her day at Wimbledon.
But the gritty Ukrainian found a way to rally back, braving two rain delays as she notched an emotional 0-6, 7-5, 6-2 over No 8-seeded Maria Sakkari to move into the second round of Wimbledon at the All England Club in London on Wednesday afternoon.
“Every time I was going into the rain break I was going through different emotions,” Kostyuk said on court after her victory, which came in one hour and 53 minutes. “I couldn’t put the ball in. I don’t know I just tried to find [my game].”
Kostyuk, who entered the match with an 0-6 lifetime record against the top 10 at the majors, and 0-15 overall reaches the second round at Wimbledon for the third year in a row, but has neve been beyond.
“This one means a lot, because it was my 15th attempt to beat top-10 player,” she said.
“Yeah, that was, I had to do a check on my list. Very happy that that pressure is off my shoulders.”
It was an emotional scene, both during and after the match.
“I was crying, during the delays, and I tried to figure it out,” she said. “It probably helped me that I was down in the score, it kept me together as I tried to come back into the match.”
Kostyuk, like many players, admits that it has been difficult waiting out the rain that has interrupted play in each of the first three days.
“Not easy going through these couple of days,” she said. “I don’t know how I’m going to feel tomorrow but today I’m definitely going to celebrate a little bit.”
Sakkari is the second top-10 seed to fall on the women’s side. No 7-seeded Coco Gauff was defeated by Sofia Kenin on Day 2.
Kostyuk, ranked No 36, will play the winner of the match between American Alison Riske-Amritraj and Spaniard Paula Badosa next.
