Wimbledon: Humbert through to last 16 to face Alcaraz
In a match carried over from Friday, Ugo Humbert edged out Brandon Nakashima 7-6 (9), 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (6) to move into the fourth round
Frenchman Ugo Humbert, the No 16 seed, advanced to the last 16 of Wimbledon by edging out American Brandon Nakashima 7-6 (9), 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (6) in London on Saturday afternoon.
The match was suspended on Friday in the fourth set at 6-6 with Humbert leading two sets to one and the players returned on Saturday to begin with the tiebreak.
Humbert won that to close out the win and set up a fourth round clash against Carlos Alcaraz, the No 3 seed and defending champion, next.
This is only the second time in 23 Grand Slam main draw appearances that Humbert is through to the last 16. The first one also came at Wimbledon in 2019.
The Frenchman won against Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko (6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-7 (3), 6-1) and Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp (7-6 (9), 6-1, 6-3) earlier in the week.
In the previous rounds of the tournament, Nakashima, ranked No 65, beat Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 18 seed (6-2, 6-3, 6-4) and Australian Jordan Thompson (6-3, 6-2, 6-2).
