Wimbledon: Halys makes third round

French qualifier Quentin Halys won against Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 21 seed, 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to move into the third round of Wimbledon at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Thursday evening.

It was the 29th five-set battle held across the first four days of Wimbledon this year, which is a tournament record for the first two rounds. The Open Era record for five-setters at Wimbledon is 34, in 1969, and the Open Era record for five-setters at any major is 35.

Halys, ranked No 220, will play Dane Holger Rune, the No 15 seed, next.

The Frenchman beat American Christopher Eubanks (6-4, 6-4, 6-2) ahead of his victory.

In the previous round of The Championships, Khachanov, ranked No 22, benefited from the abandonment of Aslan Karatsev (6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (11), 2-0).
