Wimbledon: Fils becomes youngest Frenchman to reach Wimbledon’s second week since 2005

Frenchman Arthur Fils advanced to the last 16 of Wimbledon by defeating Russian Roman Safiullin 4-6, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Saturday.

At 20 years and 32 days, Fils becomes the youngest Frenchman to reach the round of 16 at
Wimbledon since 2005, when Richard Gasquet.

Fils, ranked No 34, will play Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 9 seed, next.

The 20-year-old Frenchman edged out Swiss Dominic Stricker (6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4) and benefited from the abandonment of Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 7 seed (7-6 (2), 6-4, 2-6, 6-6 (8)) in the previous rounds of The Championships.

Earlier in the tournament, Safiullin, ranked No 44, overhauled Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 26 seed (6-7 (5), 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4) and won against Tomas Machac (6-2, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3).
