Danielle Collins, playing last Wimbledon, reaches third round for the first time since ’19

The last Wimbledon appearance for American Danielle Collins is going well so far. The No 11 seed, who plans to retire at the end of the 2024 season, edged Hungarian qualifier Dalma Galfi 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday to reach the third round for the second time, and the first time since 2019.

Collins, ranked No 11, will face Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 20 seed, next.

The American won against Dane Clara Tauson (6-3, 7-6 (4)) in the previous round of The Championships.

She had difficulty closing the Hungarian out, as she squandered a match point while serving for the win at 5-1, and again at 5-3. She was broken both times, but broke back, converting her fourth match point in the tenth game of the second set to complete her victory in 90 minutes.

During the first round of The Championships, Galfi, ranked No 127, won against Egyptian Mayar Sherif (6-1, 6-2).
