‘I have to try to improve’ – Ruud biggest shock elimination so far as home hope Broady makes third round
Liam Broady won against Casper Ruud 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 on Thursday and will play Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No 26 seed, in the next round
Wildcard Liam Broady advanced to the third round of Wimbledon by defeating Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 4 seed, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Thursday afternoon.
Broady, ranked No 142, will face Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No 26 seed, next.
Ruud: I feel like I’m going to fall on grass
Ruud gave all credit to his opponent afterwards – saying, “He deserved the victory, for sure,” – but admitted he feels that his game doesn’t suit grass courts.
“I use a lot of force from my legs. Let’s say I’m running out to my forehand, I push off with my right leg mostly. Then when I land, I’m kind of, depending on that first step, being quite quick, recovering back to the middle.
“Every time I try to do that on grass, I have a feeling when I land and kind of want to go back, I’m going to slip and fall, have a nasty fall.
“I don’t dare to play the same shots that I do on hard court and clay in a way. That’s why I get a little tentative. Sometimes I’m not hitting the shots like I want to. It’s just because I’m really scared and I have to take all these extra steps.
“Yeah, I think that’s the biggest challenge that I will always kind of feel on the surface. Just being really careful with your movements. That makes me not being able to kind of play with a force that I like to in a way, if that makes sense. It’s not an excuse, it’s just how I feel.
“You see other players doing it, as well. I just have to try to improve. Let’s see, maybe next year I will have some more days on the grass before and during Wimbledon than this year.”
First top 10 win for Broady
Ahead of his victory, Liam Broady won against Frenchman Constant Lestienne (6-1, 6-3, 7-5).
Ruud, ranked No 4, beat French qualifier Laurent Lokoli (6-1, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3) in the previous round of The Championships.
This is Broady’s first career win against a player ranked in the top 10.
