‘That’s for my gran’: Tearful Boulter defeats Pliskova, advances to third round for first time
Katie Boulter edged out Karolina Pliskova 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 on Thursday afternoon. She’ll play Frenchwoman Harmony Tan in the next round
Wildcard Katie Boulter reached the third round of Wimbledon by edging out Czech Karolina Pliskova, the No 6 seed and last year’s runner-up, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Thursday.
With her mother and grandfather looking on, a weeping Boulter said after the match that the family had just suffered a bereavement.
“My gran passed away two days ago, and I’d just like to dedicate that to her today,” she said.
She also thanked the crowd for their support on Centre Court, saying: “I’ve got absolutely no words right now. I’m literally shaking. The crowd was unbelievable – thank you so much for getting me through that.”
She added: “It’s a dream come true for me, I’ve hopefully got more matches to play. If I’ve got you guys behind me hopefully I can go a long way.”
Boulter had already beaten Pliskova last week in the Eastbourne round of 32, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Boulter, ranked No 118, will play the winner of the match between Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo, the No 32 seed, and Frenchwoman Harmony Tan next.
Katie Boulter defeated Frenchwoman Clara Burel (7-5, 6-3) ahead of her victory.
In the previous round, Pliskova, ranked No 7, won against Tereza Martincova (7-6 (1), 7-5).
