Badosa beats Kvitova to set up Halep showdown
Paula Badosa took down one former champion – Petra Kvitova – on Saturday and will next face another former champion – Simona Halep – for a spot in the quarter-finals
Fourth seeded Paula Badosa advanced to the last 16 of Wimbledon by beating two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, the No 25 seed, in straight sets at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Saturday.
Badosa won 7-5, 7-6 (4) to set up a clash against another former champion, Simona Halep, who won the women’s title in 2019.
The Spaniard has not dropped a set in three matches this week in London, having overcome American qualifier Louisa Chirico (6-2, 6-1) and Romanian Irina Bara (6-3, 6-2) in straight sets earlier this week.
Halep has beaten Badosa in their only previous meeting – winning their round of 32 encounter in Madrid earlier this year in straight sets.
