“When Alcaraz wins, Spain wins” : social media reacts to Alcaraz’s Wimbledon achievement
Tennis fans and ex-players have been magnanimous in their praise for the Spaniard’s efforts in the Wimbledon final on Sunday
Social media has blown up in response to Carlos Alcaraz defeating Novak Djokovic in the final of Wimbledon on Sunday.
The 21-year-old powered past the 24-time Grand Slam champion in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(4) to defend the Wimbledon title he won for the first time last year, handing Djokovic his second successive defeat at this stage of the tournament and claiming his fourth Grand Slam title overall.
Victory at Wimbledon also sees Alcaraz become the youngest-ever player to win both Roland-Garros and Wimbledon in the same year, and fact that many have expounded online.
Wimbledon and Euros double for Spain
Of course, many parallels have been made between Alcaraz’s success at Wimbledon and Spain’s victory over England at the Euros, which came just hours later.
Alcaraz was even seen celebrating Spain’s win with a rousing rendition of ‘We Are the Champions’ by Queen in a nightclub somewhere.
Big names in tennis congratulate Alcaraz
The who’s who of tennis have also had their say, chiming in on Alcaraz’s performance with their praise for the 21-year-old on Sunday.
The royals themselves even congratulated Alcaraz:
Even Djokovic posted soon after the tournament, saying the victory was “well deserved” for Alcaraz.
Finally, Alcaraz himself posted, declaring that he is “still dreaming” following the victory.
