Serena Williams stunned by Harmony Tan in first round at Wimbledon

Frenchwoman Harmony Tan edged out American wildcard Serena Williams 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7) to advance to the second round at Wimbledon on Tuesday evening.

40-year-old Williams, a seven-time Wimbledon and 23-time Grand Slam champion, saved a match point at 5-6 in the third set of the dramatic affair but could not come through the match tiebreak against the world No 115.

The seesaw battle lasted three hours and 11 minutes in total.

“I’m really surprised today,” said Tan, who was making her Wimbledon debut. “When I saw the draw I was really scared, because, yes, it’s Serena Williams – she’s a legend and I was like ‘Oh my God, how can I play.’ If I can win one game or two games, it was really good for me.”

Tan, ranked No 115, will face Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo, the No 32 seed, next.
