Mpetshi Perricard to make Wimbledon debut after Davidovich Fokina withdraws
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard receives a lucky loser spot at Wimbledon due to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina withdrawing with a back injury
Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard will make his Wimbledon debut on Tuesday as a lucky loser, after Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina withdrew due to a back injury.
Davidovich Fokina had been struggling with the injury in the week preceding Wimbledon, withdrawing from the Eastbourne Open last week.
Mpetshi Perricard has only played two Grand Slam main draws previously, losing both of his matches at Roland-Garros the past two years.
However, he poses a threat on the grass of Wimbledon, and will face off against No 20 seed Sebastian Korda in the first round.
The Frenchman possesses a devastating first serve, and came within inches of qualifying for Wimbledon this year.
He won his opening two matches of qualifying in straight sets, before losing 7-6(10), 5-7, 6-7(4), 6-7(5) to Maxime Janvier in the final round.
With a second chance, can the 20-year-old cause a big upset against Korda, one of the in-form grass players in 2024?
