Kyrgios: “I’ll probably start my comeback with doubles then move to singles”
Ten months after his wrist surgery, Nick Kyrgios has returned to practice and intends to be back on the Tour soon, as revealed in a soon-to-be released interview for the UTS website
The first thing we now know about Nick Kyrgios’ comeback to professional tennis is that he will be among the field of eight players for UTS New York (22-23 August). But the Australian star, aged 29, will be back on the ATP Tour before, in doubles and in singles, as he revealed to the uts.live website.
“I’m back in London doing a lot of TV commentary of Wimbledon, which is exciting” he said in a soon-to-be-released interview.
“But I’m also doing training during these two weeks. I’m trying to have some hits with the players that are here to see where my wrist is at. It’s been 10 months since my surgery so I’ll try to work my way back onto court.
“I’ll be playing doubles in the next month (on the ATP Tour). It will be exciting. I’ll probably start there and hopefully, if everything is OK, I’ll move to singles and then I’ll see how long I’ll hang around for.
“I missed competing, I missed hearing the crowd, my fans,” Kyrgios added. “Even the people that hate me, I miss them, I miss them all. I can’t wait to be back.”
Kyrgios : “I miss winning”
Kyrgios has played only one match on Tour since Tokyo in October 2022. It was in Stuttgart, in June 2023, where he lost 7-5, 6-3 against Yibing Wu. Kyrgios had left knee surgery in January 2023 for a cyst growing in his meniscus, and a wrist surgery for a torn ligament in June 2023.
He was in the field for UTS in 2023 but had to withdraw even if he made an appearance at the Los Angeles stage to coach Frances ‘Big Foe’ Tiafoe. Kyrgios was back at practice in Australia last Spring.
“I’ve missed beating people, I miss winning,” Kyrgios continued. “And I was winning so much in 2022 before I had to stop. I want to get back out there and have that feeling and I feel that I want to give my fans one more year, or two more years, of the Nick Kyrgios experience.”
Kyrgios, who said in 2023 that he would not play until he is 33, could not confirm that playing two more years was a definite plan.
