Krejcikova into maiden Wimbledon semi-final, beats Ostapenko
Barbora Krejcikova is into the last four of Wimbledon thanks to a straight-sets win over Jelena Ostapenko
Barbora Krejcikova is into her second career Grand Slam singles semi-final, beating Jelena Ostapenko 6-4, 7-6 (4) to reach the last four of Wimbledon.
As one might expect from an opponent who had lost only 15 games thus far this fortnight, the Latvian did not make it easy for her. She broke the Krejcikova serve when the Czech was serving for the match, and continued to push in the tiebreak.
But in this meeting of two former French Open champions, it was Krejcikova who triumphed.
She is the sixth Czech woman to reach the women’s semi-finals in SW19 in the Open Era, following in the footsteps of Marketa Vondrousova, Lucie Safarova, Petra Kvitova, Jana Novotna and Karolina Pliskova.
Fascinatingly, this is the first time in her career that she has won five consecutive matches on grass.
Her success at the Championships this year follows her run to the Roland-Garros title in 2021, when she achieved a double – winning the women’s doubles as well, a feat she could repeat this year.
