“I don’t think I’m supposed to be someone like me” – Wimbledon finalist Kyrgios on his younger self
After reaching his first Grand Slam final, Australia’s Nick Kyrgios hopes his story will inspire other kids to keep believing in themselves
At the age of 27, Nick Kyrgios is a Wimbledon finalist – something that many of his critics find hard to believe. Well, you wouldn’t blame them as the Australian finds it tough to believe the same as well.
Speaking to the media on Friday at Wimbledon, where he reached his first Grand Slam final after Rafael Nadal withdrew from their much-anticipated semi-final clash the previous evening, Kyrgios was asked about the picture of himself as a young kid that he posted on his Instagram account and what that kid was like.
Kyrgios : “Hilarious !”
“Hungry. I was hungry (smiling)” he said with self-deprecation, in an apparent reference to his weight. Later he would confirm the same by saying : “Look at that photo, I literally look like Manny from ‘Modern Family’.”
“I think it’s just hilarious because I don’t think I’m supposed to be someone like me” he continued. I look at that photo, I grew up in Canberra, the courts I trained on were horrible, and now I’m in the chance to play the Wimbledon final.”
That’s fine they doubted me, but I never lost belief in myself
Nick Kyrgios
The Australian, who has spoken about his struggles openly in the past, said he hopes his story inspires kids around the world that they can also achieve something very special in their own lives even if others write them off.
“I think it’s honestly an inspiration for any sort of kid who’s kind of been outcasted or just been surrounded by negative headlines or negative just clouds or trying to be just being brought down from a lot of different angles. I feel like it’s possible, it’s still possible to achieve something quite special if you just believe in yourself. I never really lost belief in myself,” Kyrgios added.
Kyrgios : “A strong message”
“I feel like most people around me at some stage in my life have lost belief that I would ever make a Grand Slam final, doubted me a little bit in my behavior or just the way I trained. I think everyone, it’s safe to say. That’s fine they doubted me, but I never lost belief in myself. I think that’s just a strong message for any kid who doubts himself. Just keep going,” the 2022 Australian Open men’s doubles champion said.
