Here’s how Novak Djokovic can take back the No 1 ranking at Wimbledon
The ATP’s No 1 ranking is up for grabs once again at Wimbledon. Scroll down to look at the scenarios for Alcaraz, Djokovic and Medvedev.
The No 1 ranking has changed hands six times already in 2023, with Carlos Alcaraz, who finished 2022 as the No 1, and Novak Djokovic, the all-time leader in weeks at No 1 with 389, flip-flopping in January, March, April, May and twice in June.
As it turns out, the could switch positions again after Wimbledon, or both could be replaced by Daniil Medvedev. Currently Alcaraz has the 80-point lead over Djokovic, with Medvedev 1785 points back.
Here’s how the scenarios for all three players shape up at Wimbledon…
How Alcaraz remains at No 1
Alcaraz will retain the No. 1 ranking if he records a better or equal Wimbledon result than
Djokovic, assuming both players reach at least the 3rd round.
Alcaraz will also retain the No. 1 ranking if Djokovic loses prior to the 3rd round AND Medvedev does
not win the title, regardless of Alcaraz’s own result.
The Spaniard, has spent 26 weeks at No 1, and that number will tick to 28 during Wimbledon. He says he’s not thinking about ranking at all at the moment.
“Honestly, I don’t feel too much pressure about being No. 1,” he told reporters on Sunday. “I know what I have to do. For me it’s to play, play my best, try to win tournaments. If I would not do that, for me it doesn’t matter. But I don’t think about being No. 1 too much. I’m trying to put out all that pressure.”
How Djokovic reclaims No 1
Djokovic will return to the No. 1 ranking if he reaches at least the 3rd round AND records a better
Wimbledon result than Alcaraz.
The 23-time major champion has already shattered all records when it comes to holding the No 1 ranking, but he is still 11 weeks shy of getting to 400 weeks. If he can finish 2023 at No 1, the Serbian would break his own record by recording an eighth year-end No 1 finish.
How Medvedev reclaims No 1
It’s a longshot, but there is a way for Medvedev to finish Wimbledon at No 1.
Medvedev will return to the No. 1 ranking if he wins the title AND Alcaraz loses prior to the round of 16
AND Djokovic loses prior to the quarterfinals.
The WTA’s No.1 also could change hands
Iga Swiatek’s once-gaping lead atop the WTA rankings could once again be completely erased by Aryna Sabalenka at Wimbledon. The Belarusian had a chance at Roland-Garros but couldn’t seal the deal.
Swiatek currently leads Sabalenka by 984 points.
Here are the scenarios for Sabalenka and Swiatek at SW19
Sabalenka will need to reach the final to have a chance of overtaking Swiatek at No.1. If Swiatek advances to the quarter-final or semi-final, then Sabalenka would need to win the title.
