Alcaraz extends unbeaten run at Grand Slams and Wimbledon to 13 with win over Medvedev
The 21-year-old Spaniard is 3-0 in Grand Slam finals and will play Novak Djokovic or Lorenzo Musetti for the title on Sunday
Wimbledon and grass were never expected to be Carlos Alcaraz‘s happy hunting ground. But the 21-year-old defeated Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in four sets to win his 13th match in a row at the All England Club and also his 13th in a row at Grand Slams ,and advance to Sunday’s final.
The win moved the 21-year-old one win away from a second consecutive Wimbledon title and a Roland-Garros/ Wimbledon double in the same year.
Medvedev starts strong and wins first set
It was Medvedev, playing Alcaraz in the Wimbledon semi-finals or the second year running, who started the match stronger, going up 5-2 in the first set. Alcaraz fought back to level the set at 5-5 as the Russian received a point penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. That warning did not deter Medvedev, who played a superb tiebreaker, dropping only one point to win the first set 7-6.
Alcaraz wins next three sets to seal the win
In the second set, Alcaraz began to find his range and broke the Russian’s serve in the fourth game to go up 3-1. The Spaniard consolidated that break and did not lose serve again to win the second set 6-3.
The third set followed a similar pattern. With the momentum in his favour, Alcaraz broke Medvedev early in the third set again and held on to his serve to win the set 6-4.
Alcaraz broke again in the opening game of the fourth set and looked to be in cruise control but Medvedev broke back immediately to keep himself alive in the contest. Another break of the Russian’s serve in the seventh game sealed the deal for the Spaniard, who then held his next two service games to complete the 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win in just under three hours.
30th career top 10 win for Alcaraz
Having won Roland-Garros last month, this was Alcaraz’s 13th consecutive win in Grand Slams. It was also his 30th career top 10 win, 17th top 5 win and moves him into his fourth Grand Slam final. He will aim to keep his perfect record in Grand Slam finals intact when he meets either seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic or Lorenzo Musetti in the final on Sunday.
The Spaniard will also be hoping to become only the fourth male player since 1980 to win Roland-Garros and Wimbledon in the same year (the others being Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic).
