“What happened in Halle & Wimbledon stays in the past, I’m looking forward to the future” – Bublik hopes UTS kickstart fruitful US Open series
The Kazakh believes that among the players in the field, Gael Monfils, is the most entertaining
Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik is hoping that the UTS series in Los Angeles will serve him as a good launchpad for the upcoming US Open series, a stretch in which he has historically not done well over the years.
Bublik reached the third round of the US Open in his first main draw appearance at Flushing Meadows in 2019 but since then has never gone past the second round again. He has also never made it past the second round of the Cincinnati or Canadian Open Masters.
With a good grass court season, which included a first ATP 500 title in Halle and the first second week at a Grand Slam at Wimbledon, Bublik has his eyes now set on doing well during the American summer.
“The US swing has never been a success for me,” Bublik said ahead of the kick-off of the UTS league in Los Angeles on Thursday. “But maybe this year starting with the with a great UTS event. Maybe it will change something we’ll see at the end of the US Open series.”
However, the world No 27 is not one to sit back and rest on his recent laurels as he told Chris Oddo. “It’s good, but what you really mentioned (winning Halle and second week of Wimbledon) is behind me, so I’m really looking forward to the new chapter to the new US Open series. What happened in Halle and Wimbledon stays there, stays in the past, so I’m looking forward to the future.”
“I think they will enjoy it.”
Bublik is one of eight players lined up for the UTS series which begins on Friday and the crowd puller hopes that fans in Los Angeles will embrace the innovative format.
“I think they will enjoy it. And especially, the fans are really close to the court, they will do whatever they want. I think it’s really different than pretty much different event to what we used to play.”
While many fans will be hoping to watch some of the eclectic and entertaining shot making of Bublik over the next few days, the Kazakh says feels the most entertaining player in the field is French veteran Gael Monfils.
“Nick (Kyrgios) is out of the field. I would have said him, but now I think I’ll go for Gael (Monfils). I think he has the biggest fan experience on the court, he’s older, we are 10 years apart and I think he has 10 years more of experience of being an entertainer.”
