“I lost 6kgs” – Why Mensik was totally off this week at UTS
The Czech failed to win a match in Guadalajara
A bout of food poisoning contributed to Jakub Mensik’s poor form at UTS Guadalajara this weekend, with the Czech player revealing that he lost six kilograms during the tournament.
Mensik failed to win a single match on his UTS debut, losing to Flavio Cobolli, David Goffin and Tomas Machac to finish last in Group B, winning just one quarter across his three matches.
The usually hard-to-beat 19-year-old explained that it was not the format which he struggled with, but his own body.
“It was difficult for me,” he said. “I got sick the second day I got here, I had food poisoning.
“I’m kind of surviving the last few days, I lost six kilograms of weight. I suffered a lot.
“I came here a very long way, I am playing a few tournaments afterwards. So for me, at least I was here just to step on the court and show my best performance.”
Mensik targets UTS return later in 2025
Despite having little to show for his time in Guadalajara, Mensik hopes to return to UTS later in the year and make amends.
“I’m kind of sad that I couldn’t give the fans the entertainment that I wanted to,” he continued. “I’m kind of sad I couldn’t give my best effort. I mean, I did, but it was tough. I’m glad that I survived those three matches. Hopefully I will get a chance to play this season one more time.
“For the time that I did spend out there, I enjoyed with those rules and with all of the other players. It’s such a fun one.”
