Wu goes from Great Wall to Great Entertainer, booking Final 4 spot at UTS Los Angeles
China’s Wu Yibing has won hearts in Los Angeles with his on-court antics, defeating Diego Schwartzman in sudden death at UTS LA
Match three on Day 2 of UTS Los Angeles saw Yibing “The Great Wall” Wu come up against Argentina’s Diego “El Peque” Schwartzman for a spot in the Final 4.
While there was plenty on the line in this Group A clash, Wu was completely unfazed, transforming from The Great Wall to The Great Entertainer on Saturday evening.
Pirouetting after points – standing IN the service box to return – blowing kisses to his opponent – bowing – taunting Schwartzman at the net – showing off his vocal range between quarters – running into the crowd to high-five Ben Shelton – sitting down and meditating on court – accusing Nick Kyrgios of using his towel.
Is there anything Wu didn’t do in his victory over Schwartzman?
After the match, The Great Wall simply declared to the crowd: “It’s you guys that bring me to a different personality!”
El Peque, who had match points at sudden death to win the encounter, was gracious, sharing with his mid-match interviewers that “Yibing’s one of the funniest guys on Tour right now. Outside of the court also, he’s very crazy with his stuff.”
The Los Angeles crowd will see more of The Great Wall tomorrow, with the Chinese player winning his place in the Final 4 on Sunday at UTS LA.
