Goffin defeats Mensik in deciding-point drama to clinch win at UTS Guadalajara
The Belgian swept aside the young Czech 3-0 to move to the top of Group B at UTS Guadalajara
David ‘The Wall’ Goffin defeated Jakub ‘Menimal’ Mensik 3-0 on the second day of UTS Guadalajara to drag himself back into the qualification race for Group B, with Mensik’s progression in the tournament now out of his hands.
The Belgian took the first quarter 15-10 as his young opponent took time to adjust to the unique conditions of high altitude and the heat of the Mexican sun, something Mensik admitted to in his changeover interview.
That continued into the second quarter as Goffin moved into a 2-0 lead, taking that second quarter 19-11 as Mensik apparently forgot to make use of his bonus-points card.
The Belgian then won an extraordinary third and final quarter, stealing it 15-14 on the tension of a deciding point after Mensik squandered a 14-11 lead at the end of normal time.
The Czech must win his final match to have any hope of progressing, while Goffin can qualify for the semi-finals with a win in his final group match later today.
