US Open: Zverev into second round with victory over compatriot Marterer

No 4 seed Alexander Zverev beat lucky loser Maximilian Marterer 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2 to reach the second round of the US Open.

The world No 4 looked in good form at the start of his campaign, taking the opener with little trouble, but was pushed to four sets after conceding the second in a tight tiebreak.

With his fellow German having levelled the score at one set apiece, Zverev then found another gear to move through the final two sets with relative ease.

Zverev reached the second Grand Slam final of his career earlier this season when making the showpiece match at Roland-Garros, having also reached the final in New York in 2020.

He is one of the outside favourites for the title, after a highly successful season that has yet to yield the major title he covets.

Zverev, ranked No 4, will face the winner of the match between French wildcard Alexandre Muller and Australian Adam Walton next.
