Wimbledon champ Vondrousova advances, completes fourth round line-up at US Open
The Czech defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-2, 6-1. She’ll play American Peyton Stearns in the next round
Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova advanced to the last 16 of the 2023 US Open by beating Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No 22 seed, 6-2, 6-1 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Saturday.
Vondrousova, ranked No 9, will play American Peyton Stearns next. The Czech has now won 10 matches in a row at the Majors after her surprising run to the Wimbledon title while being ranked 42nd in the world.
Vondrousova won against qualifier Na-Lae Han (6-3, 6-0) and Italian Martina Trevisan (6-2, 6-2) in the earlier rounds in Flushing Meadows and has dropped only 10 games to reach the last 16 in New York.
Alexandrova, ranked No 20, edged out Canadian Leylah Fernandez (7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-4) and defeated Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko (6-1, 6-3) earlier in the week.
