US Open: Vesely wins five-set epic against Francisco Cerundolo to advance to third round
Jiri Vesely defeated Francisco Cerundolo 7-6 (5), 6-2, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (6). He’ll face Croat qualifier Borna Gojo in the next round
Jiri Vesely reached the third round of the US Open by defeating Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 20 seed, 7-6 (5), 6-2, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (6) at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Despite fighting back from two sets down to two sets all, 20th seed Cerundolo was unable to complete the comeback and ultimately went down in a mammoth encounter that passed the four hour mark.
Vesely, ranked No 437, will play Croat qualifier Borna Gojo next.
Ahead of his victory, Jiri Vesely won against French qualifier Enzo Couacaud (5-7, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4).
Cerundolo, ranked No 20, won against American qualifier Zachary Svajda (5-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3) in the previous round of the Flushing Meadows tournament.
