US Open: Vekic beats Stearns, faces Zheng Qinwen in fourth round

Croat Donna Vekic, the No 24 seed, advanced to the last 16 of the US Open by beating American Peyton Stearns 7-5, 6-4 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Vekic, ranked No 24, will face Chinese Qinwen Zheng, the No 7 seed, next.
The Croat won against Australian qualifier Kimberly Birrell (6-4, 6-4) and Belgian Greet Minnen (7-5, 6-1) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds, Stearns, ranked No 47, defeated Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko (6-1, 7-5) and Russian Daria Kasatkina, the No 12 seed (6-1, 7-6 (3)).
