US Open to extend to 15-day tournament in 2025
The final Grand Slam of the year joins the Australian and French Opens in expanding their traditional two-week formats by an extra day
US Open organisers have announced that the tournament will expand from its previous two-week format to a 15-day event, starting on the Sunday two weeks before finals day.
The new format will start at this year’s edition, with the main draw starting on Sunday, 24 August and ending on Sunday, 7 September 2025.
The final Grand Slam of the tennis season joins Roland-Garros and the Australian Open in extending its tournament to 15 days.
The Australian Open made the change in 2024, while the French Open has been a 15-day major since 2006.
This change leaves Wimbledon as the only remaining Grand Slam to retain the traditional Monday start in a 14-day format.
US Open organisers said the move would allow “more fan access than ever to the main draw following three consecutive years of record-breaking attendance.”
The Australian Open said that moving to a Sunday start would help mitigate against late-night finishes, but some observers point to the increased revenue as another critical factor.
The US Open, for example, estimates the expansion will allow access for an additional 70,000 spectators, with the first-round matches across the men’s and women’s singles events taking place across the opening three days of the tournament.
