Alert: Tiafoe returns to U.S. Open semis following Dimitrov retirement
Frances Tiafoe got a fourth-set retirement from Grigor Dimitrov in the US Open quarter-finals on Tuesday. Tiafoe was leading two sets to one when it ended.
American Frances Tiafoe, the No 20 seed, reached semi-finals of the US Open when Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 9 seed, retired at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Tuesday night.
Tiafoe led 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 4-1 when Dimitrov called it quits.
The American will play compatriot Taylor Fritz, the No 12 seed, for a spot in the championship match.
In the previous rounds, Tiafoe defeated American Aleksandar Kovacevic (6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5), Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko (6-4, 6-1, 1-0 ret.), No 13 seed Ben Shelton (4-6, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3) and Australian Alexei Popyrin, the No 28 seed (6-4, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-3).
Dimitrov’s run to the quarters featured wins over Kyrian Jacquet (6-3, 6-4, 6-2), Australian Rinky Hijikata (6-1, 6-1, 7-6 (4)), Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor (6-3, 6-3, 6-1) and Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 6 seed (6-3, 7-6 (3), 1-6, 3-6, 6-3).
