US Open: Thompson thumps Arnaldi to reach last 16

Australian Jordan Thompson advanced to the last 16 of the US Open by winning against Italian Matteo Arnaldi, the No 30 seed, 7-5, 6-2, 7-6 (5) at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Saturday.

Thompson, ranked No 32, will face the winner of the match between fellow Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 10 seed, and Daniel Evans next.

The Australian beat Frenchman Constant Lestienne (6-1, 6-3, 6-2) and Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 7 seed (7-6 (2), 6-1, 7-5) ahead of his victory.

In the previous rounds of the US Open, Arnaldi, ranked No 30, won against American wildcard Zachary Svajda (6-3, 6-2, 6-1) and Russian Roman Safiullin (6-2, 6-4, 6-4).
