Swiatek equals best US Open performance by reaching fourth round, meets Niemeier next
Iga Swiatek beat Lauren Davis 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday night to reach the fourth round of the US Open for the second year in a row
World No 1 Iga Swiatek, the top seed, advanced to the fourth round of the US Open for the second year in a row with a straight sets win over American Lauren Davis.
Swiatek came from 4-1 down in the second set to beat Davis 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday evening. She has yet to drop a set this week, having beaten Italian Jasmine Paolini (6-3, 6-0) and American Sloane Stephens (6-3, 6-2) in straight sets as well.
It is the first time Swiatek wins three matches in a row since the French Open.
“It wasn’t as smooth as in first and second round” admitted Swiatek. “I’m pretty happy I made it through and could close it in second set and come back. For sure she plays totally differently than most of the players, which threw me a little bit off the rhythm. But I’m happy I was fighting till the end.”
Swiatek’s win sets up a clash against Germany’s Jule Niemeier, who scored a 6-4, 7-6 win over China’s Qinwen Zheng.
