US Open: Paul plays brilliantly but falls short against Sinner
Jannik Sinner beat Tommy Paul 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5), 6-1 on Monday night and will face Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 5 seed, in the next round
Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, defeated American Tommy Paul, the No 14 seed, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5), 6-1 to advance to the quarter-finals of the US Open in New York on Monday night.
Paul played some of his best tennis of the tournament, initially racing out to a 4-1 lead against the world No 1. However, two tiebreak sets brought no reward for the American, and with Sinner finding his flow in the third set, it was a bridge too far for Paul.
Sinner, ranked No 1, will play Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 5 seed, next.
In the previous rounds of the US Open, the Italian won against American Mackenzie McDonald (2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2), American Alex Michelsen (6-4, 6-0, 6-2) and Australian Christopher O’Connell (6-1, 6-4, 6-2).
Paul, ranked No 14, won against Italian Lorenzo Sonego (6-4, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2), Australian Max Purcell (7-5, 6-0, 1-0 ret.) and Canadian qualifier Gabriel Diallo (6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (3)) earlier in the tournament.
