US Open: Shapovalov through to third round for the sixth year in a row; Rublev next

Canada’s Denis Shapovalov, the No 19 seed, reached the third round of the US Open by beating Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Thursday night.

With the win, Shapovalov is through to the round of 32 at the US Open for the sixth year in a row – the only player to accomplish the feat on the men’s side. The Canadian left-hander needed five sets to win his first round match over Marc-Andrea Huesler (2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1) on Tuesday.

This is only the second time since Rome in May that Shapovalov has won back-to-back matches in the draw.

Ranked No 21, Shapovalov, will meet ninth seed Andrey Rublev, of Russia, next. The pair are tied at 2-2 in career head-to-head with their last encounter coming in 2022 which the Russian won.
