Argentinian Diego Schwartzman, the No 14 seed, beat Australian Alexei Popyrin (7-6 (3), 7-5, 7-6 (6)) to advance to the third round of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Thursday.

Schwartzman, ranked No 16, will play the winner of the match between Australian Jason Kubler and American Frances Tiafoe, the No 22 seed, next.

The Argentinian benefited from the retirement of American Jack Sock (3-6, 5-7, 6-0, 1-0) ahead of his victory.

In the previous round, Popyrin, ranked No 84, won against Chun-Hsin Tseng (6-3, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3)).
