13 wins in a row for Samsonova as she reaches US Open fourth round
Liudmila Samsonova won against Aleksandra Krunic 6-3, 6-3 on Friday night and will play the winner of the match between Australian Ajla Tomljanovic and American Serena Williams in the next round
Russian Liudmila Samsonova extended her winning streak to 13 matches as she defeated Serb Aleksandra Krunic in straight sets to reach the fourth round of the US Open on Friday night.
Samsonova, who won titles in Washington and Cleveland coming into this tournament, won 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 17 minutes. The Russian has also won her last eight matches without dropping a set.
She had defeated Czech qualifier Sara Bejlek (6-3, 6-1) and Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 14 seed (6-3, 7-6 (3)) in her first two rounds in New York this week.
Samsonova into the fourth round at a Major for the second time
Samsonova, ranked No 35 in the world, will next meet either Australian Ajla Tomljanovic and American Serena Williams for a spot in the quarter-finals.
This is the first time that the big-hitting Samsonova is through to the fourth round in New York in three main draw appearances and her second time in the last 16 at a Major – the first one coming at Wimbledon last year.
