US Open: Samsonova scores 12th win in a row with upset over 2021 finalist Fernandez

Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova has been on a roll, winning back-to-back WTA tournaments in the lead-up to the US Open.
On Wednesday at the US Open, the 35th ranked Samsonova extended her winning streak to 12 matches with an upset win over last year’s runner-up Leylah Fernandez to advance to the third round.
Samsonova slammed 11 aces in the match, winning 80 percent of her first serve points and 74 percent of her second serve points to win 6-3, 7-6 (3) over the 14th seeded Fernandez in one hour and 46 minutes.
Samsonova, who has won both her round in straight sets, and seven matches in a row without dropping a set, is through to meet Serb Aleksandra Krunic in the third round with the Serb knocking out 2021 Roland-Garros champion Barbora Krejcikova.
