Alert – Sabalenka wins the US Open final
Aryna Sabalenka lifted the trophy on Saturday against Jessica Pegula.
Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed, defeated American Jessica Pegula, the No 6 seed, 7-5, 7-5 to lift the US Open trophy in New York on Saturday.
Ahead of her victory, Sabalenka, ranked No 2, beat Australian qualifier Priscilla Hon (6-3, 6-3), Italian Lucia Bronzetti (6-3, 6-1), Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No 29 seed (2-6, 6-1, 6-2), Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 33 seed (6-2, 6-4), Chinese Qinwen Zheng, the No 7 seed (6-1, 6-2) and American Emma Navarro, the No 13 seed (6-3, 7-6 (2)).
Pegula, ranked No 6, defeated Shelby Rogers (6-4, 6-3), Sofia Kenin (7-6 (4), 6-3), Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (6-3, 6-3), Russian Diana Shnaider, the No 18 seed (6-4, 6-2), Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed (6-2, 6-4) and Karolina Muchova (1-6, 6-4, 6-2) in the previous rounds.
