US Open: Ruud reaches third round

Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 5 seed, edged out Dutchman Tim van Rijthoven (6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4, 6-4) to advance to the third round of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Wednesday.

Ruud, ranked No 7, will play the winner of the match between No 29 seed Tommy Paul and Sebastian Korda next.

The Norwegian defeated Kyle Edmund (6-3, 7-5, 6-2) ahead of his victory.

In the previous round of the Flushing Meadows, Van Rijthoven, ranked No 117, eventually beat Chinese qualifier Zhizhen Zhang (3-6, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (9), 6-1, 6-4).
