Rublev races into third round for fourth straight year
The Russian’s straight-sets win over SoonWoo Kwon sends him through to a match against Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No 19 seed, or Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena
Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 9 seed, beat SoonWoo Kwon 6-3, 6-0, 6-4 to advance to the third round of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Thursday.
Rublev, ranked No 11, will play the winner of the match between Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No 19 seed, and Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena. He’s through to the third round for the fourth year in a row.
The Russian won against Serb Laslo Djere (7-6 (5), 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4) ahead of his victory. In the previous round, Kwon, ranked No 81, won against Spanish lucky loser Fernando Verdasco (6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3).
