US Open: Berrettini retires injured, sending Rinderknech into third round

Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech moved into the third round of the US Open when Italian Matteo Berrettini retired on Thursday afternoon at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.

Rinderknech, ranked No 73, led 6-4, 5-3 when Berrettini, ranked No 36, rolled his ankle and was unable to continue with their second round match.

The Frenchman will face the winner of the match between Frenchman Gael Monfils and Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 8 seed, next.

In the first round of the US Open, Arthur Rinderknech won against Argentinian Diego Schwartzman (6-3, 6-4, 6-2). Berrettini, on the other hand, defeated Frenchman Ugo Humbert, the No 29 seed (6-4, 6-2, 6-2) in the previous round of the tournament.
