US Open Qualifying: Zvonareva, Cressy advance to second round

Former world No 2 Vera Zvonareva turned back the clock and scored a straight sets win over Jaimee Fourliss to move into the second round of qualifying at the US Open on Wednesday.

The 38-year-old Russian, a finalist at the 2010 US Open, is ranked No 672 in the world in singles but played an impressive match to oust her Australian opponent 6-3, 6-0.

Some other familiar names hoping to navigate their way from the qualifying to the main draw were knocked out though. 16-year-old Brenda Fruhvirtova went down to Moyuka Uchijima in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

Top seed Nao Hibino, Hamburg runner-up Noma Noha Akugue, former top 10 player Coco Wandeweghe and former French Open quarter-finalist Sesil Karantancheva also lost in the opening round while second seed Dana Shnaider made it past the opening hurdle. Players need to win three matches in qualifying to secure a main draw berth.

On the men’s side, American Maxime Cressy, Australian’s John Millman and Canada’s Vasek Pospisil were among the winners on Wednesday but former top 10 players David Goffin and Fabio Fognini were knocked out in the first round as was second seed Cristain Garin, who was defeated 6-4, 6-2 by Titouan Drogue.
