US Open: Another American falls as Ostapenko survives Pera test
Jelena Ostapenko defeated Bernarda Pera 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 and will face Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, in the next round
Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 20 seed, moved into the last 16 of the US Open by defeating American Bernarda Pera 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Friday.
Next up, Ostapenko, will play Iga Swiatek, the top seed, who blasted past qualifier Juvan for the loss of only one game earlier today.
Ahead of her victory, the Latvian won against Italian Jasmine Paolini (6-2, 4-6, 6-1) and edged out Russian Elina Avanesyan (6-3, 5-7, 7-5). Pera, ranked No 73, beat Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the No 16 seed (7-5, 6-4) and Chinese Xiyu Wang (3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2) in her previous rounds.
