Norrie moves into US Open last 16 for first time, awaits Shapovalov or Rublev
Cameron Norrie won against Holger Rune 7-5, 6-4, 6-1 on Saturday. He’ll face the winner of the match between Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No 19 seed, and Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 9 seed, in the next round
No 7 seed Cameron Norrie moved into the last 16 of the US Open for the first time by defeating Dane Holger Rune, the No 28 seed, 7-5, 6-4, 6-1 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Saturday.
” It was a big goal of mine to play well at slams and play deep in slams, and to have these match-ups,” Norrie said in his press conference afterwards.
“I think it does help, you know, going into the tournament, being ranked where I am, being seeded where I am…I think it’s great with the seeding. You can work your way more into the tournament than going out there, having to play a top seed early on.
“So it was a good match today, and I was happier with how I performed. I still got a lot of things I would like to improve, and I got tomorrow to do that.”
Norrie: I enjoyed today
It took the Brit only two hours and 12 minutes to dismiss his young opponent. The pair have now met three times, with Norrie winning all three.
“I feel great,” Norrie told British broadcaster Amazon Prime afterwards. “You know how it is, sometimes you start a little bit tight, you play guys who are not great match-ups for you and you get a bit nervous…it was good, I built a lot from my previous two matches and was able to enjoy it today.”
Norrie, ranked No 9, will play the winner of the match between Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No 19 seed, and Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 9 seed, next.
Cameron Norrie won against Frenchman Benoit Paire (6-0, 7-6 (1), 6-0) and Portuguese João Sousa (6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (4)) in the previous rounds of Flushing Meadows.
Earlier in the tournament, Rune, ranked No 33, won against German Peter Gojowczyk (6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (5)) and American John Isner (W/O).
