US Open: Nakashima upsets Musetti to reach fourth round
Brandon Nakashima edged out Lorenzo Musetti 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) on Friday to ensure last 16 debut at US Open
American Brandon Nakashima upset Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 18 seed, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) to reach the last 16 of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Friday.
Nakashima, ranked No 50, battled with Musetti for more than three hours in the four-setter. He started the match in dominating fashion, racing to a 4-0 lead in the first set with two break point conversions.
The following set saw Musetti fight back but the 23-year-old from the US regained momentum to claim the third set.
In the fourth set, Nakashima found himself at the receiving end of a 4-0 score line as the Italian broke twice and threatened a decider. He, however, hung tough to recover in time and force a tiebreaker, that he later won with a mini break.
Nakashima will face the winner of the match between Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry and German Alexander Zverev, the No 4 seed, next.
The American defeated Dane Holger Rune, the No 15 seed (6-2, 6-1, 6-4) and Frenchman Arthur Cazaux (6-4, 6-4, 6-2) ahead of his victory.
In the previous rounds of the US Open, Musetti, ranked No 18, edged out American Reilly Opelka (7-6 (3), 1-6, 6-1, 7-5) and won against Serb Miomir Kecmanovic (3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5).
