Straight sets for Murray over Cerundolo after double-bounce chaos
Andy Murray defeated Francisco Cerundolo 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 on Monday and will face the winner of the match between Australian John Millman and American wildcard Emilio Nava in the next round
Andy Murray advanced to the second round of the US Open by winning against Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 24 seed, 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Monday.
Even though it was a straight-sets win, the former world No 1 said the conditions made it feel much tougher.
“That felt like five sets to me!” he confessed in his post-match interview. “It’s very tricky conditions today, very humid and hot. I was really happy with the way I got through that one.
“It was not easy…I knew I was going to have to play well, and I did in the important moments.”
Murray has recently been honest about his problems with cramping during matches, and early on in the match asked the umpire to ensure that the ball kids did not remove any of his empty drinks bottles, presumably so he could keep an eye on his fluids consumption.
Murray, ranked No 51, will play the winner of the match between Australian John Millman and American wildcard Emilio Nava next.
