Murray advances to US Open third round for first time since 2016, Berrettini next !
Andy Murray won against Emilio Nava 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0 on Wednesday. He’ll face the winner of the match between French lucky loser Hugo Grenier and Italian Matteo Berrettini, the No 13 seed, in the next round
Andy Murray moved into the third round of the US Open by winning against American wild card Emilio Nava 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Wednesday.
“Physically this is the best I’ve felt in the last few years,” Murray said afterwards. “My movement is by far the best it’s been in a long time.”
He added: “I’m getting closer to where I want to be. Hopefully I can have a deep run here.”
Murray: I hit it bigger and deeper
The former world No 1 had plenty of praise for his young opponent, who took the first set – and he wondered if the gruelling nature of Nava’s first-round win – in five sets, against John Millman – might have had an impact on his drop in performance level later in the match.
“I think I started to take the ball on a little bit more,” he said. “He was dictating a lot of the points in the first set. Once I started to hit the ball bigger and deeper I was able to control the points more.”
Murray, ranked No 51, will face Italian Matteo Berrettini, the No 13 seed and 2019 semi-finalist, next.
Ahead of his victory, Murray defeated Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 24 seed (7-5, 6-3, 6-3).
