Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka crashed out of the US Open as Karolina Muchova, from the Czech Republic, defeated her 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the second round on Thursday on Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

Osaka started the match steadily before Muchova rose to break her twice and take the first set, landing 86 percent of her first serves.

The second set witnessed a close fight as the two players remained on serve before Osaka converted a break point in the ninth game. She then served for the match and earned three set points only to be broken back as she committed errors with her forehand and sprayed a double fault as well.

The set went to the tiebreaker, where the two-time US Open champion managed to save a match point but Muchova closed it by cashing in on the second.

“Honestly this year the biggest win for me is that I could play again,” Muchova, who underwent a wrist surgery earlier this year, told Nick Kyrgios in the post-match interview. “I’m really grateful I’m able to play tennis and that I made it here. This is just the cherry on top to be here in this stadium. It’s crazy.”

Muchova, ranked No 52, will play Russian Anastasia Potapova next. In the previous rounds, the Czech won against American Katie Volynets (6-3, 7-5).
